Entering service with the US Military in 1960, the F-4 Phantom II began as a fleet defense fighter for the USN. In 1963, the aircraft was adopted as the USAF’s lead fighter. It was a Cold War icon that broke fifteen world records and held onto five of them until 1975. The aircraft was produced from 1960-1981, with 5,195 built and operating in eleven other countries. This 148 scale model from Academy depicts the McDonnell Douglas F-4B, number 200 as it appeared with the “Sundowners” in the 1970s. The VF-111 “Sundowners” acquired their F-4B aircraft in 1971, and that fall, they were deployed to the Gulf of Tonkin on the USS Coral Sea for 148 days.
